I am praying for a friend who is having it bad at work. I don't know the details since it was not shared other than the request for prayer, which is fine by me and so prayed I did, albeit in a general sense.

But this time I was moved to pray that the job, the one he is currently having and the new one he is asking for, be kind to him.

I'm not so sure how a job can be kind, but kindness is surely found wanting these days.

In our quest for success and personal gain, kindness is something that we may have forgone.

What is kindness?

In Matthew 25:35-36 we have, "For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me."

Kindness is the act of goodness and empathy for others. It's the putting them in your mind and recognising and attending to their needs, sometimes over your own. It's the offer of a hand, a heart and a smile.

Kindness is hard to find in the corporate world these days. And I think it is the demand for performance, performance, performance. You need to deliver. We may give you a pat on the back but in the end, you deliver. And with that, people clamor to the top by eliminating competition, within the company, within the same team.

Is there any other way for success and still be good and kind to one another?

But then, I think the answer is found in the very definition of what success means to you.

  1. I like your thoughts Pearlie. I so agree with your take on it in the corporate world. I wrote about kindness last month. You can read it here.
