I learnt a new term a week ago: FIT, which stands for Free Independent Travellers, referring to travelers these days who travel on a self planned itinerary.
This is not our first FIT trip but it has certainly become a norm. And with that, I have decided to keep our Taipei Trip simple, free and easy. I have a rough plan but we will be on a free flow basis making changes as we see fit.
On our first day in Taipei, the plan was to go to Huashan 1914 Creative Park in the morning, lunch, Taipei 101 and the nearby Raohe Night Market.
We decided to walk to Huashan 1914. The sights, the buildings, the streets on the way were interesting.
We even tried renting an OBike. I downloaded the app and I think it gives me two free rides for a start. For someone who have not cycled in goodness knows how many years, I’m glad I can still ride a bike. But I didn’t ride for long. I dare not ride on the busy streets though I’d say it’s safer to ride a bicycle in Taipei than in Kuala Lumpur.
Huashan 1914 was an interesting place. It used to be a winery but was reconstructed as a creative park in 2004. Don’t ask me why I didn’t take any photos of the place. I guess I was just too mesmerized in a new place with so much to see.

Lunch was amusing. I went to my map app where I have marked all the interesting places and recommended eateries to go to. And the nearest marked spot to Huashan 1914 was this place called VVG Thinking. Interesting name and it was reviewed to be a place that serves good Asian food.
When we were there, we went in, sat down but when we looked at the menu, it’s all Italian food!
Italian food for our first meal in Taipei? (We skipped breakfast.) Definitely not!
So we got up, apologized and left the restaurant and went to another restaurant for some Beef and Tendon Noodle Soup, which was awesome.
And according to our plan, we were suppose to go to Taipei 101 and Raohe Night Market but we decided to forgo that and went to Ximending instead.
I think this might be the most happening place in Taipei. Street food, restaurants, stalls of all kinds, upmarket stores, discounts stores, it’s all here in Ximending.
It was a good Taipei Day One.
